Access Statement

Introduction

Elderton Lodge is a grade II listed shooting lodge, which has been lovingly restored to an eleven bedroom Country House Hotel. Every effort has been made to ensure that the hotel is fully accessible to all guests wherever possible.

Pre-Arrival

  • The Hotel can be contacted by telephone, fax, direct email or via the website.
  • Bookings can be made online via our website and third party websites.
  • We intend to have our brochure available in Braille very soon.
  • The hotel can be accessed by car or taxi with the nearest train station just 5 miles away at North Walsham. Norwich Airport is approximately 17 miles away and helicopters may land at the hotel. Our staff are happy to help with arrangements if required.
  • The nearest towns are Cromer 6 miles and North Walsham 5 miles.

Arrival & Car Parking Facilities

  • The hotel car park is immediately to the front of the hotel, with space for 70 cars, plus an overflow to the rear. The car park has a flat gravel surface, leading to a paved path way to the front door. There is a small step into the hotel, which we plan to provide a mobile ramp for to make it easier for wheelchair users.
  • Guests may park at the front door for loading and unloading and staff are available to assist if required.
  • The entrance to the drive way is well sign posted and these signs are lit at night.
  • We have a speed bump along our main drive way for the purpose of traffic calming.
  • Dogs are permitted and water can be provided.

Main Entrance & Reception

  • The hotel entrance is well lit and clearly recognised by a sign above the door. This leads to a reception lobby which provides natural daylight and seating. The reception desk is low with a chair and space to place your legs underneath. Reception is manned from 7.00am - 11.00pm (or until all overnight guests have arrived). Should our staff be busy with other guests, there is a bell on the reception desk to ring for assistance.
  • Guests are greeted on arrival and given a familiarisation tour of the hotel and facilities.
  • The hotel does not have a lift to the first floor, as it is a grade II listed building and we are not permitted to install one.

Public Areas - Hall, Stairs, Landing, Corridors etc

  • The hall, stairs, landings and corridors are all carpeted.
  • We do not have a lift, the first floor can only be accessed by stairs.
  • The stairs have a banister rail.
  • The corridor which accesses the ground floor bedrooms has two small steps, a warning sign for these is situated on the door leading to the corridor.
  • All corridors are well lit and bedroom doors have the numbers clearly indicated on them.
  • A fire door is situated along the first floor bedroom corridor.

Public Areas – Lounge Bar, Lobbies etc

  • Our public areas are all on the ground floor level, with wide doors making easy access to each area for wheelchair users. The hotel plans to provide guest information and menus in Braille.
  • The hotel does not have baby changing facilities within the cloakroom areas, but will make every effort to accommodate this in one of our bedrooms if available.
  • The background music we provide in our public areas can be turned up or down on request.
  • All public areas have natural daylight and have general ambient lighting when dark.
  • The hotel does not have a loop system for the hard of hearing, but would be happy to look into hiring one on behalf of a guest if requested.

Public WCs

  • The Ladies toilet is situated on the ground floor, just off the main reception. There is a step down to these facilities and there is a warning sign for this on the door as well as a sign for the "Ladies".
  • The facility consists of two cubicles, a chair and hand basin, however this space is not suitable for wheelchair users. The floor is carpeted.
  • The Gents Toilet is also on the ground floor, accessed via a corridor from the main reception lobby, again this is sign posted. These toilets have recently been refurbished to provide two urinals and a cubicle toilet with tiled floor and hand basin. This space is also not suitable for a person in a wheelchair. Guests in wheelchairs may use a ground floor bedroom which has more space to maneuver, if available.

Restaurant / Dining Room

  • Our Restaurant consists of two rooms, the dining room and conservatory, which is divided by French doors, these are usually open, but can be closed to provide private dining. Both rooms can be accessed separately from the public areas / reception lobby.
  • The Restaurant will seat 50 guests and the tables and chairs can be moved to allow a flexible layout and extra space between tables if necessary.
  • Our menu is clearly laid out, but not yet in Braille. However our staff are fully versed and able to help with any queries or will read / describe the menu if required, the restaurant offers full table service.
  • Our Chef's are more than happy to cater for any special dietary requirement.
  • Our Restaurant is non smoking

Outdoor Facilities

  • The hotel is surrounded by wooded gardens which can be accessed from the front and rear of the hotel and via the lounge, the garden is all on one level and is a mixture of lawn, gravel, paved patio areas and mature flower beds.
  • We have a variety of wooden garden furniture and cigarette bins are provided.
  • The gardens can be lit by lanterns at night time.

Bedrooms & Sleeping Areas

  • Nine of the eleven bedrooms are on the first floor, accessed only by stairs.
  • However we do have two bedrooms on the ground floor, a twin bedded room, recently refurbished with an ensuite, walk-in shower and a double bedded room with an ensuite bathroom. There are two steps down to these rooms which guests are made aware of at the time of booking.
  • All of our bedrooms are ensuite with either a shower cubicle or a bath, offering a choice to those who may not be able to manage getting into a bath.
  • All bedrooms are fully carpeted, with natural daylight and general ambient lighting, both ceiling and lamps.
  • A television with teletext and DVD player is provided in each room, along with an alarm clock and telephone. The telephones have a raised No. 5. There is also a cordless kettle in each room, with an external water level indicator.
  • Guests are alerted by an alarm in the event of an emergency. Staff are trained to alert less able guests in person where possible.

Marquee

Our marquee is a permanent structure situated in the garden, close to the hotel. It can accommodate up to 180 guests (but only 140 if all seated). The wood floor has been laid on leveled hardcore and covered with carpet, to one end is a permanent wooden dance floor, approx 5m x 7m. The marquee can be accessed from the hotel via a paved footpath through the garden or from the overflow car park at the back, also via a paved footpath. There are no steps into the marquee and the tables and chairs can be moved to allow a flexible layout and extra space between tables if necessary. The marquee has adequate ambient lighting and can be heated.

Additional Information

  • A clear fire evacuation procedure is on the back of each bedroom door and guests are advised to read it carefully.
  • Staff are fully trained on the procedure to follow in case of a fire. Less able guests are prioritised. Partially sighted / blind and hard of hearing / deaf guests will be notified in person and given assistance to evacuate the building.
  • Guests with disabilities such as the above are highlighted on our guests list in order to inform the Fire Brigade.
  • The hotel is non smoking, cigarette bins are provided in the garden.
  • The hotel has two interconnecting rooms which may be used by families or a carer, concessions for carers would be at our discretion.
  • We are happy to store medication and special dietary food in our fridge.
  • We accept type talk calls.
  • Dogs and guide dogs are also accepted.
  • Our website conforms to Level 2 (WAI Guidelines) and can be verified at http://wave.webaim.org/report?url=http%3A%2F%2Felderton-lodge.co.uk

Future Plans

Being a grade II listed building means that we are unable to alter the structure of the hotel so this makes it very difficult for us to make the required changes to make the hotel more accessible to less able guests.
We plan to extend the paved area in the garden in order to provide an improved paved path way all the way from the main hotel to the marquee.
We will also purchase a mobile ramp to help wheelchair users over the various steps around the hotel.
